problem with red X
Okay so i have had my ipod for around 2 years now....and like last night i dropped my ipod on accident on to my carpet floor....it also landed onto like a pile of clothes i then wake up this morning and go to play some songs on my ipod classic 80gb and guess what no songs are playing and it automatically will skip songs like it is corrupted or something....i had less than 50% of the ipod used up with files and songs and what not...i have it all in my library on itunes...i am using the 64bit version..
then after awhile of not playing songs and me having to restart it a couple times it gave me the nice little red x with the circle and the support url for apple below it...
i have tried the 5r's and can only do around 3 of them...i cannot restore my ipod nor can i reload my software on it...
everything else i can do i just put the ipod through a diagnostic test manual and automatic and both where passes... idk if it did a hard drive test or not....
well so i go to do the restore steps and i get the ipod to do the steps to get it into disk mode and have the apple showing i then connect it to the pc while itunes is open...i then hear the little beep noise from vista that a device has been plugged in....
the first time it detected it and installed windows drivers for the ipod to actually be able to be useable by my new laptop....it then said i need to restore my ipod and gave me some software to download i did that and then it went and said preparing ipod for restore....it then gets through that then nothing happens just sits there like it is done or something...
i found out that it would disconnect and reconnect itself over again and then it could disconnect itself and ipod while go black screen and nothing happens then i have to like put it into disk mode again with the apple showing...
i have the newest version of itunes installed i have not though been keeping my ipod uptodate with software because the stupid vista and itunes would screw up my cd rom drive and muck my registries up...so i haven't been messing with itunes and my ipod on my pc lately....
i was wondering what i could do besides throwing it away and go out and buy a new 3g s iphone 16gb????
besides also beating on it some more i don't feel like having to pay apple to tell me that it is dead....
Sounds like a failed hard
Sounds like a failed hard drive. Try the diagnostic instructions on this site at top of page under drop down menu iPod Help/ Also see the iPod icons page for more clarification.
I was searching for the same
I was searching for the same answer you are looking for and stumbled upon this one on the apple support forums, it worked for me!
"Some times when you drop your ipod the lens inside skips. (kinda like a record player) reset your ipod by holding the middle and menu button until you hear clicking. then with one hand hold the ipod firmly and hit the side of it onto the PALM of your other hand. Sometimes this jumps the needle back into place but not all the time."
worked after the third time i tried it. might take some patience. good luck!!!
THAT WORKED!!!! I'm not gonna
THAT WORKED!!!! I'm not gonna lie. I was skeptical at first, i mean the solution was reminiscent of just banging technology against a wall out of frustration until it works. But it was mylast resort and it actually fixed it. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS. Much appreciated.
Thanks a lot, i didnt expect
Thanks a lot, i didnt expect this solution to work, but it worked like charm, infact in first time.. Thanks a lot, you saved my 1000 bucks..
Holy shit...just found this
Holy shit...just found this post by googling ipod classic 80gb red x error ... having the same problem and saw this suggestion on this site and one other discussion site...IT WORKED! for me i had to hold the play and select button, but once it shut off and i smashed it a few times (and i had to attempt this a few times, to be honest), it started actually responding and allowed itself to be restored to original factory settings... which kinda sucks, but it beats the hell out of having no ipod at all and having to buy a new one. thanks!
